"“I’ve been fortunate to be able to try so many things, including human resources, contracts and now IT. I’ve also benefited from having great mentors. Every office I have worked in has felt like a family.”"
After graduating from college in 2008, Terrell Martin decided to apply to the commonwealth’s Temporary Clerical Pool while he searched for permanent work. However, he soon realized that state government could be the opportunity he was looking for.
“I was able to gain exposure to a lot of different offices. When I talked to managers and heard their stories of how they were able to advance their careers, I was inspired.”
After several assignments, Terrell was offered a permanent position at PennDOT and is currently an information technology project manager with the Office of Administration.
“I’ve been fortunate to be able to try so many things, including human resources, contracts and now IT. I’ve also benefited from having great mentors. Every office I have worked in has felt like a family.”
Project managers plan, develop and implement IT projects in state agencies. They coordinate with the program and technical staffs and others to ensure that work is completed accurately, on time and within budget.
Terrell has recently managed a project to outfit the new Commonwealth Response Coordination Center with all of the technology that PennDOT staff need to support the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency in monitoring and responding to incidents throughout the state.
“I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that comes with the completion of a project. It makes me proud to know that I was part of making it happen.”
