Striving for Safety

"“My board experience within the rail industry has given me the knowledge and confidence to communicate with high ranking railroad and government officials and the community.""

After a 20-years with a major rail transportation company, Lugene set a new career path for herself with the commonwealth.

“I started with PennDOT as a freight analyst and then acquired the position overseeing the grant application process for railroads in the commonwealth. At the time, we had a $24M budget that I was in charge of. I joined the PUC in 2013 as a railroad safety inspector.”

Railroad safety inspectors conduct on-site reviews to verify compliance with state and federal rules. They also conduct investigations into accidents and complaints. Lugene’s previous background in transportation was a perfect fit for her new job.

“In 2014, I was promoted to my current position as FRA Programs Supervisor, where I supervise all disciplines of railroad safety inspections, which include operating practices, hazardous materials, track, motive power and equipment and signal and train control.

“My board experience within the rail industry has given me the knowledge and confidence to communicate with high ranking railroad  and government officials and the community. I enjoy working in the rail safety division here at the PUC because I know that we are making a difference while striving for safety and compliance in the industry.”
